Welcome to the Goring and Streatley Sustainability Group

Hydro-Electric Project Milestones in 2011

After extensive data analysis of the past 17 year's river flow at Goring & Streatley, we are confident that the project will deliver 1,000 MegaWatt-hours of electricity per annum from an average rainfall year. This is equivalent to powering more than all the homes in Streatley, 24*7

After EA concerns about fish safety with the higher performant screws were allayed, our Impoundment License application was re-activated in October 2011

Four estimates for the construction phase obtained from contractors approved by the EA for working on the river

Archimedes Screw supplier chosen in August 2011

Grid connection and cable route agreed with local DNO and landowners in May 2011

Impoundment License application submitted in February 2011

November 2010: The Environment Agency approve our Pre-Application for installing three Archimedes Screws on the weir at Goring.

October 2010, GSSG joins the Carbon Leapfrog (www.carbonleapfrog.org) programme that links communities with organisations that offer Pro-Bono support in such functions as legal, design, insurance and PR.

Hydro-Electric Project scales another hurdle, in 2010

In a process that took a year, The Environment Agency has approved our Flood-Risk mitigation measures, with the addition of another 3 metre sluice gate next to the three Archimedes Screws.

After extensive computer modelling and analysis, performed by Peter Brett Associates of Reading, we were able to show no increase in flood levels with the additional sluice gate. Indeed, for the average winter flooding that we regularly experience, the hydro scheme will actually enable the EA to better manage flood risk compared to the current situation.

GSSG is now applying for planning permission from the EA and SODC.

Local MPs become Patrons of GSSG in 2009

We're very pleased to announce that MPs John Howell of Henley and Richard Benyon of Newbury have become patrons of GSSG. Their active support will assist us in our current phase of seeking planning permission from the EA and SODC and when raising funds in 2011.

Goring wins South of England Village of the Year, 2009
and
Oxfordshire Village of the Year, 2009

and our sustainability initiatives clinched the wins

From a shortlist of 12, Goring was announced as the winner of Oxfordshire Village of the Year live on BBC Local Radio on 10th July 2009. Villages were judged in four categories, with Goring winning the £500 Sustainability prize and another £500 for overall winner. Judges were impressed with activities around thermal imaging of homes, providing allotments, eliminating plastic bags, car sharing and the hydro-electric power scheme. Goring was then entered into the South of England competition.

In late September 2009 it was announced that Goring had won South of England Village of the Year, once again winning the Sustainability Award.

The hydro-power scheme is about to enter a new and exciting phase with the completion of the feasibility studies. GSSG is examining the possible sources of funding for the construction phase, which is likely to cost about £1 million.

Register an interest in possible investment in the hydro-power scheme.

Are Goring & Streatley In Transition?

WHAT IS A TRANSITION TOWN/CITY/VILLAGE

A transition initiative is a community that is unleashing its own latent collective genius to look peak oil and climate change squarely in the eye and implement ways to address this big question. “ For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of peak oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of climate change). The resulting coordinated range of projects across all these areas of life leads to a collectively designed energy descent pathway. The community also recognises two crucial points;

That we have used immense amounts of creativity, ingenuity and adaptability on the way up the energy upslope.

That there is no reason for us not to do the same on the downslope. If we collectively plan and act early enough there’s every likelihood that we can create a way of living that’s significantly ,more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment than the oil-addicted treadmill that we find our selves on to day
