About UsThis is a featured page

The Goring and Streatley Sustainability Group (GSSG) consists of volunteers within our local community committed to challenging climate change for the benefit of the broader population and our children. We have two main objectives, first: To promote for the benefit of the parishes of Goring and Streatley, the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment [by promoting sustainability]; and secondly, to advance the education of the public of the communities of Goring and Streatley in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment through sustainable practices.

We also want to be part of bridging that gap between “denial of climate change” and ”despair because it’s all too late”. Our charter is to educate the community in ways of mitigating the problem. Our current major project is a hydro-electric power generating scheme at the weir of Goring and Streatley. There are ongoing smaller projects which the GSSG encourages members to get involved with on an ongoing basis. This programme of events are constantly updated on the website and in regular email newsletters.

GSSG was established in 2006 by Kay and Martin Baker, longstanding members of the Goring and Streatley community, as an initiative arising from the publication of the Streatley and Goring Parish Plans which include actions relating to engaging the challenge the impending effects of and subsequent damage caused by Climate Change.

GSSG is a not-for-profit community organisation whose role is to be a source of information and actively promote education of the rural communities of Goring, Oxfordshire, and Streatley, Berkshire to encourage their sustainable development. This will be achieved through briefings, organisation of events and the provision of both on-line and off-line materials. GSSG is also developing a network of like-minded members of the community to allow this initiative to grow at a grass-roots level throughout the region to provide a local perspective in supporting, encouraging and stimulating the sharing of best practice.

GSSG is fostering an approach for energy efficiency and use of renewable energy. It is also delivering on the ground and has a number of projects in the early stages of development including the deployment of hydro electricity from the Thames. Profits from any ventures will be invested by GSSG in further renewable energy activities and for community gain including such projects as improved sustainable lighting and other community amenities.
