Excuse my ignorance, but as you do not state exactly where this project is to be constructed, it would be of interest to know how it would effect leisure boating.

This looks like a really bright idea - as a canoeist I have shot and portaged more weirs than I care to remember - each time I ponder the lost energy - great idea to catch it and add a bit of light and warmth to the future!

A village free of plastic bags? Not a new idea, a number of villages in the UK have already taken the initiative. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wiltshire/7152812.stm, http://www.bbc.co.uk/devon/content/articles/2007/05/01/modbury_plastic_bags_feature.shtml How about banning bottled water, huge amounts of resources are used to extract, package and transport bottled water. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8141569.stm

"As I'm sure you're aware, energy prices are growing at greater than 15% per annum this Century. I'm not saying this will continue indefinitely but I believe prices will always exceed the RPI for ever (and of course strongly impact the RPI). Could you factor that into your calculations and let us know what the return will be like? We have included maintenance costs in the £110,000 income already. 50 years is a conservative figure. The only thing's to be replaced are the top and bottom bearings (each with an 11 year life) and the electrical equipment - perhaps every 25 years. Thanks for your interest and comments. Dave." Dave, apologies for the delay in responding! It's certainly true that energy prices have increased over the last century and there are good structurally reasons for believing they will continue to be maintained at a level higher than that seen in the past (e.g. economic advancement in non-OECD countries is seeing around one billion people transitioning to a more developed way of life). The current global economic climate is of course depressing oil (and therefore energy prices) but many commentators would expect this to return to a range of between $60 and $90 / bbl over the medium term. OPEC itself has signalled a target price in the middle of this range. So, overall, I am agreeing with your view that energy prices will remain relatively high going forward. Nevertheless, in a standard business financial evaluation of a project like this the returns do not look compelling. Normally one would take a prudent approach by inflating costs and keeping revenues flat. You indicate that maintenance figures are already included in the £110,000 figure. That is reassuring. But even so, a basic financial analysis does not make this an investable scheme, at least not for me! This project is being considered for all the right reasons and I absolutely support it from that perspective. But for everyone's sake, I would strongly urge you to have someone familar with project economics look over the financials to make sure they truly do make good business sense. Hope this helps. We are currently commissioning an outline design study to assess where the proposed hydro electric generation facility could be located. Also the technology that should be used. We think there are lots of advantages to the Archimedes spiral but wait for the consultants to get back to us with other options as well. Do you have any thoughts on types of turbines? Where abouts on the wier they should be located? Anything else?

I don't know about the rest of you but we've got enough half tins of paint to cover the Forth Road Bridge (albeit that the bridge might look a little rainbowed). Needless to say none of these paints are exactly the colour required by the house management to paint our dinning room.
If anyone fancies a change of colour in their home, I have Dulux Kitchen and Bathroom Cookie Dow and Sunburst in stock, plus some magnolia.
Perhaps we could set an informal paint exchange hear. Shame for these pots to sit idle or worse go to landfill?

What's the current status of allotments in Streatley? I understand that there are some somewhere but who does one contact to get a space.
I understand theat if local people feel there is a need for allotments which is not being met, they can get together a group of any six residents who are registered on the electoral roll and put their case to the local authority.
If there is no availability are there 6 other residents in Streatley who'd join me in putting a case to the West Berkshire Council?

Thanks for your interest. There is already in existence a "petition" - by some 30 individuals - to the Parish Council and a working group has been set up to progress the matter. The secretary is Bernard Clucas, 873698, so please contact him to ally yourself to the cause. Tom Worthington

Are Goring & Streatley In Transition?
WHAT IS A TRANSITION TOWN/CITY/VILLAGE
A transition initiative is a community that is unleashing its own latent collective genius to look peak oil and climate change squarely in the eye and implement ways to address this big question. “ For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of peak oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of climate change). The resulting coordinated range of projects across all these areas of life leads to a collectively designed energy descent pathway. The community also recognises two crucial points;
That we have used immense amounts of creativity, ingenuity and adaptability on the way up the energy upslope.
That there is no reason for us not to do the same on the downslope. If we collectively plan and act early enough there’s every likelihood that we can create a way of living that’s significantly ,more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment than the oil-addicted treadmill that we find our selves on to day

I used to have an allotment in Streatley many years ago and was finally defeated by rabbits destroying my fencing and crops (they don't like onions) and the lack of a water supply. If water was laid on I think that they would be very popular.

"I'd be interested in a community allotment scheme - anyone else?
Lisa G" Thanks for your interest, Lisa. We'll wait to see how much interest there is from others, then consider what to do next in th elight of that. So the waiting period for a substantive response depends entirely on the rate of response form others possibly interested. Regards Tom Worthington

With regard to handling membership applications I have the following observations: 1. What do we need in the way of members’ information? People will join the website and hence we will be able to communicate with them through that. For those a computer and email there will be the normal posters around the village. In addition, they can periodically go online (perhaps in the library) to look at the website. 2. Do we need a formal membership list, that can be audited, as part of being a charity? What information would we need? Are name, address, telephone number as currently on the brochure sufficient? Do we need a signature? 3. I suggest we keep the membership list offline. We don’t need an online form on the website, nor an online database of members. 4. To comply with the Data Protection Act we need to protect the membership list and only use it for membership purposes. I suggest we discuss the details at the meeting on 5th December.

1 - Name email, telephone, land address would be nice but not essential 2. Yes as a membership org we have to keep an auditable membership list but for communication perposes it is also important. Signatures are not required I don't think 3. Agree with off line
